[San Antonio, with its layered heritage and warm resilience, breathes history and transformation. In the south side, where this health center stands, life unfolds through care, connection, and the quiet strength of community. I began this project by immersing myself in the textures and forms of the place—gathering visual references from the architecture of the city, especially the graceful arches found throughout the Spanish missions and the bold geometry present in the work of architect Ricardo Legorreta. The colors were drawn from the Spanish missions: terracottas, magentas, and deep sky blues that carry a sense of memory and renewal. I also explored the local flora and fauna—studying flowers like the Mexican Hat, Purple Coneflower, and Autumn Sage, as well as birds and native plants—to create collages that feel both grounded and elevated. Some of the elements are photographic, others illustrated. Many are hand-colored and rephotographed, layered again to give them a tactile quality and a subtle dimensionality—so even in stillness, there’s movement, depth, and life. At the heart of this process is an exploration of geometry—not only in the built environment, but in the body itself. The murals weave together two architectures: the one we live in and the one we are. I incorporate cellular forms, organic structures, and biomorphic rhythms alongside the arches and lines of the city. The portals I depict are not just entrances to buildings, but invitations inward—thresholds between states of being. Health, to me, is not just a destination, but an unfolding awareness. When we recognize ourselves as part of nature, and recognize nature within us, we begin to live more wholly. Through this visual language—collage, gesture, form, and color—I’m constructing dreamlike fields where life can be reimagined. The work is ongoing. One mural is near completion; the rest are still raw, in progress. Each one is a landscape in the making—a becoming.]
